In the 21st century's naval operations these are the heaviest and most powerful ships. The destroyers are designed to escort the other ships of a fleet or a battle group and provide defense against attacks from other combat vessels, submarines and aircrafts. Currently only four countries (United States, France, Russia, and Peru) operate cruisers. Today's destroyers are similar in size with the cruisers of the World War II period but they have more firepower and can carry nuclear missiles.
