The USS West Virginia SSBN-736 was awarded to the Electric Boat Division (unit of the General Dynamics Corporation) in Groton, Connecticut on 21 November 1983. The keel was laid down on 24 October 1987 and the submarine was launched on 14 October 1989. The USS West Virginia SSBN-736 was sponsored by Mrs. Robert C. Byrd, and was commissioned on 20 October 1990, under the command of Captain J.R.
