The submarine was built by Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics and Newport News Shipbuilding. The contract was awarded on 9 January 1989 and the keel was laid on 25 October 1989. The Seawolf was launched on 24th of June 1995 sponsored by Mrs. Margaret Dalton. The navy comissioned the submarine on 19th of July 1997 under the command of Commander David M McCall. <br><br> It is the fourth submarine named after the seawolf (solitary fish with proeminent teeht and tusks). The entire Seawolf class was intended to replace the Los Angeles class after the soviet navy presented the Akula class submarines. 29 submarines were plannad to be built but only 3 were actually constructed due to the end of the Cold war wich resulted in a lack of funding. The funds were diverted to the cheaper and smaller Virginia class. The Seawolf is a very quiet submarine, it is said that it can be much quieter at a speed of 25 knots then a Los Angeles class submarine. <table><tr><td> <a href="tiki-browse_image.php?galleryId=3&sort_mode=created_desc&imageId=21&scalesize=o"><img src="show_image.php?name=USS West Virginia SSBN-736" alt="USS West Virginia SSBN-736" title="USS West Virginia SSBN-736" border="0" width="200" align="left"></a> </td></tr><tr><td>USS West Virginia SSBN-736</td></tr></table>
