| The USS James Monroe (SSBN-622) was a Lafayette class ballistic missile submarine. It was named after the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe (1758-1831), in fact the only ship of the United States Navy to be named after him. The USS James Monroe (SSBN-622) was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company from Newport News, Virginia on 3 February 1961. After a few months, on 31 July 1961 her keel was laid down, the construction was completed in 1962 and the ship was launched on 4th of August, sponsored by Mrs. Roswell L. Gilpatric. The USS James Monroe (SSBN-622) was commissioned on 7 December 1963 under the command of Commander William H. Sandford in command of the Blue Crew and Commander Warren R. Cobean Jr. in command of the Gold Crew. After 27 years of service the Lafayette class ballistic missile submarine USS James Monroe (SSBN-622) was decommissioned on 25 September 1990 and was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on the same day. The submarine entered to the Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program, located in Bremerton, Washington and as of 10 January 1995 the USS James Monroe (SSBN-622) ceased to exist. |
