Design and construction
The submarine was built by Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics and Newport News Shipbuilding. The contract was awarded on 9 January 1989 and the keel was laid on 25 October 1989. The Seawolf was launched on 24th of June 1995 sponsored by Mrs. Margaret Dalton. The navy commissioned the submarine on 19th of July 1997 under the command of Commander David M McCall. The entire Seawolf class was intended to replace the Los Angeles class after the soviet navy presented the Akula class submarines. 29 submarines were planned to be built but only 3 were actually constructed due to the end of the Cold war which resulted in a lack of funding. The funds were diverted to the cheaper and smaller Virginia class.
Naming
The submarine is named after the seawolf, a solitary fish with strong prominent teeth and projecting tusks that give it a savage look.Technology
