The ship was christened on 2 June 2007 at NGSS Ingalls in Pascagoula, Mississippi and was sponsored by Susan Scott Martin and Carol Leigh Roelker, descendants of Thomas Truxtun

Naming

The ship is named after American Naval hero and the founding father of the US Navy, Commodore Thomas Truxtun (1755-1822). This ship is the sixth U.S. naval vessel to bear his name.

Technology

Operational Service

On 6 March 2014 the USS Truxtun left Greece on the way to the Black Sea. The ship was going to conduct several training exercises with the Romanian and Bulgarian navies. On 5 March 2014 the Turkish authorities approved the warship to pass through the Bosphorus Straits.

The exercises and the U.S. show of force - sending two Arleigh Burke class destroyers to the Black Sea was intended to reassure former Soviet republics and satellites in the aftermath of Russian actions in Crimea, Ukraine.
