| It is the fourth submarine named after the seawolf (solitary fish with proeminent teeht and tusks). The entire Seawolf class was intended to replace the Los Angeles class after the soviet navy presented the Akula class submarines. 29 submarines were plannad to be built but only 3 were actually constructed due to the end of the Cold war wich resulted in a lack of funding. The funds were diverted to the cheaper and smaller Virginia class. The Seawolf is a very quiet submarine, it is said that it can be much quieter at a speed of 25 knots then a Los Angeles class submarine. |
