On 27 June 1980 Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870, an Aerolinee Itavia Douglas DC9 crashed into the Tyrrhenian Sea between Ponza and Ustica killing all 81 passengers and crew. The aircraft was performing a flight between Bologna and Palermo. It is believed to have been brought down by an explosion either by a bomb placed in the rear lavatory either by a missile of unknown origin.

The aircraft was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-15 manufactured in 1966 and acquired by the airline on 27 February 1972. It had the serial number CN45724/22 and registration I-TIGI (formerly N902H operated by Hawaiian Airlines).
