Arresting gear (sometimes referred as arrestor gear) is a mechanical system used in aviation to rapidly decelerate an aircraft upon landing. It is widely used on CATOBAR and STOBAR aircraft carriers .
Arresting gear can also be found at land-based airfields or airports and they are used in emergencies or expeditionary operations.
Most systems of this type rely on a cable laid across the landing area. This cable is caught by the tailhook of the aircraft resulting in a rapid deceleration of the aircraft.
Some other types of systems can use nets to arrest the aircraft's wings or landing gear. These systems are mainly used in emergency and when tailhook arresting is not possible.
