On the 2 September 1998 Swissair Flight 111 SR111, SWR111 a Swissair scheduled flight from John F.Kennedy International Airport to Geneva International Airport crashed into the Atlantic Ocean just southwest of Halifax International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia.
The flight was operated with a MD11 aircraft registered HB-IWF and was in codeshare with Delta Air Lines. Out of the 214 passengers and 15 crew none survived the crash, making this the world's deadliest accident involving a MD11 aircraft and the second-highest death toll of any aviation accident in the history of Canada after Arrow Air Flight 1285
The search and recovery of the airplane and the investigation of the accident took four years and cost over CAD 57 million (38 million USD).
