On 27 June 1980 Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870, an Aerolinee Itavia Douglas DC9 crashed into the Tyrrhenian Sea between Ponza and Ustica killing all 81 passengers and crew. The aircraft was performing a flight between Bologna and Palermo. It is believed to have been brought down by an explosion either by a bomb placed in the rear lavatory either by a missile of unknown origin.
