Most frequently these tasks involve earthwork operations. There are several other terms used for these kind of machines: construction vehicles, heavy equipment, heavy machines, engineering equipment, heavy vehicles or even heavy hydraulics.

The below categorization, in this order, is a standard equipment categorization used across the world. Some contractors also place numbers on the side of their equipment corresponding to the category - Grader '02' - followed by a sequential number that usually corresponds to the number it was purchased, for example, 02-52, is the 52nd grader a company has purchased. This allows for easy recognition of the equipment type and the relevant age.
