- 27 June 1980 - Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870. An Aerolinee Itavia Douglas DC9 crashed into the Tyrrhenian Sea between Ponza and Ustica killing all 81 passengers and crew. The aircraft was performing a flight between Bologna and Palermo. It is believed to have been brought down by an explosion either by a bomb placed in the rear lavatory either by a missile of unknown origin.
1988
- 3 July 1988 - Iran Air Flight 655. A civilian Iran Air Airbus A300B2-203 performing a passenger flight from Tehran Mehrabad International Airport to Dubai International Airport was shot down by the United States Navy Guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes CG-49 after the cruiser crew mistakenly identified the aircraft as an attacking F14A Tomcat fighter aircraft.
2014
- 17 July 2014 - Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, a Boeing 777-200ER performing a scheduled international passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. From the first available informations it seems that the airplane was shot down by a yet unidentified party.
