1980
- 27 June 1980 - Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870. An Aerolinee Itavia McDonnel Douglas DC9 crashed into the Tyrrhenian Sea between Ponza and Ustica killing all 81 passengers and crew. The aircraft was performing a flight between Bologna and Palermo. It is believed to have been brought down by an explosion either by a bomb placed in the rear lavatory either by a missile of unknown origin.
1982
- 13 January 1982 - Air Florida Flight 90. An Air Florida Boeing 737-200 crashed into the 14th Street Bridge over the Potomac River due to pilot error .
- 24 June 1982 - British Airways Flight 009. A British Airways Boeing 747-200 en route from London Heathrow LHR EGLL to Auckland International Airport AKL NZAA flies into volcanic ash loosing all engines. The flight crew manages to restart engines and land the plane safely
1989
- 10 March 1989 - Air Ontario Flight 1363 was an Air Ontario flight operated by a Fokker F28 Fellowship airplane, registered C-FONF which crashed near the city of Dryden, Ontario during take-off just hundreds of meters from the airport because ice and snow was accumulating on the airplane's wings.
1996
- 3 April 1996 - Special trade mission flight IFO-21 a USAF CT-43A crashed on approach to Dubrovnik Airport during an official trade mission killing all 35 people on board.
1998
- 2 September 1998 - Swissair Flight 111. A Swissair MD11 en route from John F.Kennedy International Airport to Geneva International Airport crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Halifax International Airport due to a fire which started from the in-flight entertainement system.
2000
- 10 January 2000 - Crossair Flight 498. A Crossair Saab 340B a commuter flight from Zurich,Switzerland to Dresden, Germany crashed two minutes after takeoff at about 7km from the airport. The official report concluded that the cause of the crash was due to loss of control resulting from human error.
2001
- 24 August 2001 - Air Transat Flight 236 was an Air Transat flight operated with an Airbus A330 between Toronto and Lisbon. Due to a fuel leak the plane ran out of fuel and the crew had to glide the plane to the Azores where it successfully landed on a military airfield. No casualties were recorded.
- 12 Novembe 2001 - American Airlines Flight 587 was an American Airlines flight operated with an Airbus A300 between New York John F Kennedy Airport and Santo Domingo Las Americas Airport in the Dominican Republic. The flight crashed shortly after takeoff into a residential area in Belle Harbor, a neighborhood of Queens. All 260 passengers and crew perished along with five people on the ground.
- 24 November 2001 - Crossair Flight 3597. A Crossair Avro RJ100 operating the flight Berlin Tegel, Germany to Zurich, Switzerland crashed into a wooded area near Bassersdorf, Switzerland and exploded killing 24 of the 33 people on board, among them Melanie Thornton the lead singer of the eurodance group La Bouche.
2005
- 14 August 2005 - Helios Airways Flight 522 crashed into a mountain north of Marathon and Varnavas, Greece while enroute from Larnaca, Cyprus to Athens, Greece. All 121 passengers and crew on board were killed.
2009
- 15 January 2009 - US Airways Flight 1549. The incidents which involves a US Airways Airbus A320 en route from from New York La Guardia LGA KLGA to Charlotte Douglas International CLT KCLT. The aircraft hit a flock of birds and lost both engines in the process. The pilot decided to ditch the plane in the frozen Hudson River. All the passangers and the whole crew survived.
- 1 June 2009 - Air France Flight 447. The accident involved an Air France Airbus A330 en route from (Rio de Janeiro Galeão Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport GIG SBGL)) to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport CDG LFPG. The plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean killing all 216 passengers and 12 crew. The investigation concluded that the aircraft crashed due to an aerodynamic stall. This stall was preceded by inconsistent readings from the pitot tubes of the aircraft.
2011
- 01 November 2011 - A LOT Polish Airlines Boeing 767-300ER registered SP-LPC was operating as LOT Flight 16 from Newark Liberty Airport EWR KEWR to Warsaw Chopin Airport WAW EPWA, during the flight the aircraft experienced a failure in the hydraulic system that rendered some of the flaps and landing gear unusable. After switching to the backup system, only the flaps control was regained. Further attempts by the crew to lower the landing gear failed. After circling Warsaw Airport for more then an hour the Boeing 767-300ER made a belly landing, a very unusual and rare event for modern jetliners. The crew under the command of captain Tadeusz Wrona made a historic landing with no fatalities.
2012
- 9 May 2012 - The Sukhoi Superjet demonstration tour crash - A Sukhoi Superjet 100 with registration RA-97004 was performing a demonstration flight with 37 passengers and eight crew members on board when it disappeared from radar screens in a mountainous area 60km south of Jakarta, in the province of West Java, Indonesia. Search and rescue operations found the aircraft the next day crashed on the side of a ridge on Mount Salak
2013
- 8 June 2013 - Wizz Air Flight 3141, an Airbus A320-232 registered HA-LWM performing a flight from Bucharest Henri Coanda Airport, Romania to Rome Ciampino, Italy, made an emergency landing on Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport when the aircraft was unable to lower the landing gear. While the aircraft should have landed at Rome Ciampino the crew diverted to Fiumicino because of the longer runway. The landing was performed with one of the main undercarriage on a foam bed laid down by the firefighters. The landing was successful with no injuries although initially there were reports of injuries which were denied by Wizz Air and the airport. The aircraft was evacuated using slides.
2014
- 8 March 2014 - Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, the aircraft has not been found since (July 2014)
- 17 July 2014 - Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, a Boeing 777-200ER performing a scheduled international passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. From the first available informations it seems that the airplane was shot down by a yet unidentified party.
